The County Durham village of Tudhoe lies close to the River Wear, a short distance from both Durham and Spennymoor, and enjoys easy access to the Great North Road. It held its own race meeting on Tuesday 16th February 1847 on a flat piece of ground on the edge of the village, attended by a large group of followers both on horseback and on foot, although no betting took place. The Farmers’ Plate over 2 miles saw Mr Hopper’s Langley Lass beat Waterloo and Farmer’s Lad. The feature race was the Raby and Croxdale Stakes which went to Mr J Mewburn’s Clementina. There are no further records of racing taking place in the village. |
